JAWS and PDF?

I had a huge research project due, and many of my articles I found were in PDF. My JAWS would not read it at all. When I would scroll down the page it would say blank over and over. I gave the document to another person with JAWS, and they were able to read it fine. I use JAWS 12, and I've tried everything to fix this. On the site I got my materials off it told me to change a setting in adobe, but that didn't work. I'm sure other students have had to access PDF files as well. Has anyone else had the same problem I'm having? I need to solve it.

Okay. Because you have several issues with your Jaws not reading things here is what I think.
Your computer was set up by a sighted person that doesn't understand your needs right?
If I am correct here is what you need to do.
Reset your computer to factory settings. You do this by starting the machine and holding down the F8 until the screen appears. Choose Factory settings.
This will need to be done by a sighted person.
After the basics are set up have Jaws installed, but nothing else. Once Jaws is talking install all the other items you want yourself and listen to what Jaws tells you. When installing Adobe it sets up with accessibility settings.
Yes you can do this not resetting your computer, but you have so many issues you really need to start over before you get to much on the computer.
This is my opinion without knowing many things.
If it doesn't work after this you need to return the computer and start fresh. Sure things can be fixed, but in your case this is faster.

Hi, i don't think system restore is the answer of all things. The issue she has happen to me before, and have nothing to do with system restore or whats ever.

Kiana,
If you provide us with more information as to what version of jaws you are using, do you use IE or Firefox, what Window OS you running and what adobe reader you have install that will help greatly. however, this is some of my thoughts.

when you start up your pdf, let say, now you have an article, how do you get it read as pdf? do you use adobe, if so, when you hit enter on your article, adobe should start loading with your article on it. does it pop on a dialog box saying things like, to read the document from left to right, up to down, or prefer order and that? That is jaws setting + adobe. Also, ones you do that setting, then jaws will reckonize the pdf (provided its int scann image pdf) and when jaws reckonizing the text, your system shouldn't be disturb.
couple explaination that i can come out with your problem are
1. your jaws setting on adobe is not been set correctly,
and 2, which is what it can happen is that file itself is a scann image pdf file.

Agree with post 3. it sounds more like video, IE resolution, ETC. Also, its extremely important to insure you are using adobe X. Much more responsive than adobe 9. Also, if it's a larger document, I always switch to read all pages rather than just vissible pages.

She has some other issues as well though not just this one. I am not talking system restore, but starting fresh bing that she just got the computer, so is not far gone in having it loaded down with things.
If she can start fresh now she would solve lots of issues that are probably caused by setup.
A new computer allows us to set things just like we need them, so that would be best and would solve all her issues at once.

I set up dozens of PC weekly, for both low vission and Speech users. Typically, outside of removing bloatware, and installing updates, productivity software and antivirus, windows 7 machines work pretty flawlessly out of the box. As a former FS tech for nearly 6 years, when I hear someone saying there system is saying blank blank when trying to read, a few things come to mind. First, screen resolution, or font size. Second, is there a program running at start up in MSconfig that is not happy with jaws running on start up. Typically these are products such as nerow or cyber link products. 3rd. was jaws installed from CD or from the web site. if installed from a DVD, it could be several versions older than the latest build. I just think there is too much information missing from the original posters questions to really recommend a solution without knowing more.

Exactly, and that is why I say start from scratch. In anotheer post she says she's only had the computer sense August, so maybe 3 4 weeks? Who set it up?
She shouldn't have much on it already, so if she just starts over she can start fresh and I'll bet money many things will work.
